Report on April 9 – May 7, 2019 Trip

May 7, 2019th Year of Our Lord
HALBROOK REPORT: 74th PHILIPPINE TRIP April 9-May 7, 2019

Dear brethren,

I am celebrating my 74th birthday with a cupcake provided by Delta Airlines in returning from the 74th trip to the Philippines to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ since Jim McDonald first took me in 1995.  God’s grace and providential care blessed each day from April 9 through May 7 as I shared with Filipino saints in harvesting 24 souls for salvation by presenting 64 lessons.  “But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:16-17).  All who open their hearts to God’s Word believe and obey the gospel – many are willing to submit to Christ in the Philippines.

Elias Cruz and other brethren met me at the hotel in Manila on May 11 to repack and ship ahead boxes of Bibles & study material to be distributed along the way.  I flew to Tuguegarao, Cagayan the next day and traveled with Jerome Forelo, Dennis Yuson, and Mark Daquioag to the Pamplona area to preach at Dubeng with Robinson Pulveras on the 13th.  After preaching on “Helping Each Other” and  “Born of Water and of the Spirit,” I proceeded to Laoag City, Ilocos NorteSunday was spent laboring with Mat Sibayan, Sr. who is 80 but very active.  Our visits included churches in Laoag City, at the Provincial Jail (3 baptized), and at Sinai, Ilocos Sur.  Monday-Wednesday at the Laoag City church were devoted to the theme “The Bible Is the Word of God” with the attendance reaching 63.  Rody Gumpad joined in teaching.

Imagine the Devastation of 8 Months of Drought

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

Please read and circulate the information provided below.  Much of the Philippines has been suffering from a drought since October of 2018.  Imagine getting no significant rainfall for eight months!  I traveled and preached in the Philippines April 9-May 7, 2019 and saw the parched land and dry river beds.  Large numbers of our brethren work at the lower end of the economic scale, for instance, working in agriculture.  Many work for large plantation owners or work their own small farms.  The drought deprives them of their income in addition to driving up the prices of food.

I am receiving many requests from reliable brethren for benevolence.  A sample message from Jack Jaco is provided below.

I am willing to serve as a messenger to deliver funds to affected congregations.  If we do not know the character of an individual asking for benevolence, we are foolish to put funds in his hands.  I am willing to share what I know about various individuals requesting funds, or I will find out from Filipino saints on the scene.  Integrity must be the hallmark for both givers and receivers.

Home Again by God’s Grace

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

By the tender mercies of a loving God, 25½ hours after I awoke in a hotel room in Manila and boarded a plane for the U.S., I am now in my home again with Donna.  Of course, the Philippines is my second home, but God placed me here in Shepherdsville, KY and that is where my primary duties in life lie.  I miss everyone here when in the Philippines, and I miss my Filipino brethren when at home.

All the flights were safe and we encountered very little rough air.  From Manila to Tokyo, Japan I sat next to a gentleman who was an independent Baptist.  We had some good Bible discussion and I gave him James R. Cope’s foldout tract on The One True Church.  He was very happy to receive it.  God often opens door we did not expect.

Preaching in the Philippines April 30 – May 6, 2019

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

While I was battling sinus and bronchial infection, it was good that Tueday, April 30, was scheduled to prepare for the upcoming week’s work.  By staying in the hotel to study and rest, I stayed out of the extreme heat and humidity which facilitate the infection.

Though not feeling at the top of my game Wednesday morning, I was picked up by James Paet and we drove 80 kilometers to reach a small house to work with Ely Ebuenga where 30 souls gathered to hear God’s Word in San Ildefonso, Bulacan Province.  Catholics and Baptists were welcomed as our guests to study God’s Word.  I taught from 11:00 A.M.-12:00 noon on “The Prison of Sin,” followed by a 30 minute open forum covering several questions on baptism.

Preaching in the Philippines April 27-29, 2019

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

From Calapan on Mindoro we drove out to the Victoria church of Christ to labor Saturday morning with Mario Cay.  Sixty attended, filling the small building made of baboo slats with people outside the entrance and at the windows.  I focused on the necessity for all men to “Born of Water and the Spirit” (Jn. 3:5), with Jimmy Bobis translating, followed by Rody’s sermon “Learn of Me” and his strong appeal for people to obey the gospel of Christ without delay.  Two men and a lady came forward to confess Chtist and to submit to him in water baptism in order to receive God’s saving grace.

After lunch my topic was “Why Saints Assemble” (Heb. 10:23-25) and then there was an open forum which provided clarification on the difference between wilful absence from worship and absence because of other duties or hindrances not of our own making (sickness, caring for the sick, work schedules, etc.).

Preaching in the Philippines April 24-26, 2019

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

All day Wednesday was spent traveling from Rosario, La Union to Manila, and from there to Batangas where we caught a ferry boat to Calapan on the island of Mindoro.  It was a 20 hour day from my wake-up in Rosario to the bed in Calapan, but I napped some in the vehicle.  Since Rody took the job of all the driving, I took the job of being tired for him and napping – it worked well and we made it safely here.

At long last a dream of many years has been fulfilled because I am preaching on Mindoro for the first time.  The earliest definite record of a gospel preacher visiting the Philippines is George S. Benson who preached here on Mindoro about 1927 as a side trip while preparing to preach in China.  He baptized Leoncio Adap and Diosdado Menor – Menor in turn baptized Eliseo Sikat who died in May of 2016.  I am finally able to fulfill my promise to brother Sikat to visit and preach here.  His son Daniel and other children along with many other saints through the years have continued doing the work of the Lord in this area.

Preaching in the Philippines April 22-23, 2019

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

Two days of Bible lectures were scheduled at Rosario in La Union for April 22-23 and Rodel Baagin is the host who made the arrangements.  These studies are designed for preachers, and several of their wives also attended.  The registration for the first day was 74.

Our studies began Monday with an overview of the Bible which I entitled “The Message of the Bible: Salvation in Jesus Christ.”  This laid the foundation for the second study on “The Two Covenants.”  Rody taught a class after lunch and then I followed him with a detailed examination of “The Great Commission” (Matt. 28:18-20).  The final 1 ½ hours were spent on the open form covering a wide range of topics such as how were people saved before the gospel age (by faith in the promise of the coming of Christ), marriage and divorce (remarriage permitted only to the innocent party and only on the grounds of fornication, Matt. 19:9), essentials and incidentals, etc.  It was a full and profitable day of Bible study finishing about 6:00 P.M.

Preaching in the Philippines April 18-21, 2019

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

Our Thursday appointment was at Escoda, Marcos in Ilocos Norte where Vic Domingo has labored for many years.  This is a rural area about an hour’s drive from Laoag City. Along the way we stopped in Dingras for a quick visit with Wina Tagabe at her dental office (she is a Christian, daughter of Jhun Macusi).  I have had a little trouble with a tooth resulting in a bad taste in my mouth.  She checked the tooth and it appears a small filling was lost and a cavity is forming. The good news is that it is not an emergency and the repair work can be done after my return home.

The service at Escoda began as soon as we arrived.  Over a period of years these brethren built a substantial meeting house and today there were well over 200 in attendance.  Roger Borja translated in the dialect as I presented the lesson on “Helping Each Other,” which was well received.  Rody Gumpad exhorted the audience and then extended the Lord’s invitation.  Two young men came to the front to obey the gospel and were baptized for the remission of their sins.

Preaching in the Philippines April 14-17, 2019

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

Last Saturday night I worked until 2:00 A.M. catching up on some email (the previous hotel had no working internet), but I woke up feeling rested and ready for the Lord’s Day activities.  Mat Sibayan, Sr. picked me up so that we could attend the morning worship services at the Laoag City church of Christ. About 60 attended as I presented studies entitled “Helping Each Other” and “Born of Water and the Spirit.”

I first visited this congregation with Jim McDonald in 1995, but there was no church building at that time.  It has been a joy to observe brother Sibayan’s work with this church as they grew in spirit and in number.  Elders and deacons were appointed years ago and a commodious building was erected in the downtown.  At 80 years of age Mat’s pace is not what it used to be, and like others of us he contends with hearing problems, but he presses forward with vigor.

Preaching in the Philippines April 9-13, 2019

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

The Philippine preaching trip planned for April 9-May 7 is well underway.  I had the rare treat of 3 ½ hours sleep Monday night (usually the last night is so busy there is no time to sleep), which made for a great start!  The Tuesday-Wednesday flights from Louisville to Detroit to Tokyo to Manila were smooth and uneventful, the preferred way to travel.  Just for a little spice, the flight arrived in Detroit with only about 30 minutes for me to reach the Tokyo flight, but I ran to the next concourse and they held the flight till I could board – whew!  What is that song?…“Count Your Blessings.”  “Name them one by one.”

I worked on sermon material and napped on the 13 hour trip to Tokyo and the 4 ½ hour trip to Manila.  We arrived about 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, which allowed time for exercise before sleeping – that really helps overcome jet lag.

Thursday morning James Paet, Junior Gumpad, Ely Ebuenga, Elias Cruz, and a couple of other brethren joined me at the hotel to unpack and repack the boxes of Bibles and study materials which came as checked luggage.  Elias took the boxes to ship them ahead to the various places on my itinerary.  Later, Jerry and Teresa Toreja visited me at the hotel.  She is a doctor and wanted to examine a small sore on my face which started a couple of days ago suspiciously the same way as a staph infection which came up on my face in January.  She gave me some medicines to take in the hope of heading this problem off before it can get a good start.
