Halbrook Philippine Report April 9-19, 2013

Friday, April 19, 2013th Year of Our Lord

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

I think I have seen the moon every night since I got here, so greetings to all via the moon beams!  When I got to the airport April 9 to fly to the Philippines, I was forced to go back home and rebook the flight because a five-hour delay would make it impossible to make my connections. So, after the day’s delay, I flew to Manila safely and then went on to Laoag City, Ilocos Norte in northwestern Luzon.

Vic Domingo was conducting training classes for young preachers at Escoda, Marcos, I.N. and I joined the sessions for April 13-15, teaching a series of six lessons on “The Authority of Christ.” This material was published in booklet form by the Guardian of Truth Foundation and each student received a copy. The students were mostly teenagers but there were a few in the 8-10 year old bracket. To my surprise, these youngest men were quite attentive and did well reading passages. About 50 attended including a Catholic priest converted in December. The first day it was 95 degrees and there is no air conditioning just hot, hot, hot!

Halbrook Report: 49th Philippine Trip. Feb. 12-Mar. 9, 2013

March 27, 2013th Year of Our Lord

HALBROOK REPORT: 49th PHILIPPINE TRIP

FEB. 12-MAR. 9, 2013

Dear brethren,

My 49th preaching trip the Philippines since Jim McDonald first took me in 1995 was completed February 12-March 9 , including several days work in Australia.  Christ exercised his divine authority to complete God’s plan for our salvation and we must submit our lives to him to receive salvation: “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (Col. 3:17).  The lessons on this trip varied from the most basic first principles of the gospel to family life to detailed lessons on the history of how men changed the original gospel and found their way back to it.  All of these 40 lessons stressed the necessity of our submitting to Christ’s authority in all things!  By God’s grace, 31 precious souls submitted to Christ in baptism.

After my safe trip to Manila and on to Cebu City on Cebu Island, the first appointment was with the church at Sitio Marupa, Subabasbas, Lapu-lapu City in the Metro Cebu City area. Pablo Espinosa has preached here for years.  Fifty attended including a large number of Roman Catholics to hear lessons on “God Created All Things,” “The Purpose of Our Lives,” and “The Gospel Makes Us Right with God.”  Jonathan Carino and Fred Ogario summarized the lessons in the local dialect to an attentive audience.

The Labogon church of Christ is located in Mandaue City which is part of Metro Cebu, where we spent Saturday preaching with Roy Matta, previously a Baptist preacher.  He does a good work.

On Sunday Jonathan and I took an early morning ferry to reach Ormoc City, Leyte to worship with Willie Pelino with the Linao and San Vicente churches.  Having lost his support, he teaches school but continues to preach as best he can.  About 25 attend each place and he works with a new third group also.

February 18-22 was dedicated to a study of the home and family at the Cebu City church of Christ where Jonathan Carino preaches.  Jack Jaco from Negros Island and Lordy Salunga from Luzon came to share in the teaching load as we studied about 9 hours per day covering all the lessons in L.A. Stauffer’s Family Life and Mike Willis’ Harmony in the Home.  Additional lessons examined “Man’s Leadership in the Home” and the celebration of passionate love in marriage in the Song of Solomon.  About 40 attended including preachers from as far away as Mindanao.  A young Baptist preacher attended and was baptized.

Saturday and Sunday we drove to Bogo City to work with Gil Suico who gathered a group from a nearby village at a rented room.  These were Roman Catholics who had never studied the Bible.  We baptized 26 precious souls and now they are now trying to gather funds for a small meeting place in their village!

The newly converted Baptist preacher, Julius Labura, and Fred Ogario gathered 127 souls on Monday at Talisay, Metro Cebu .  I taught very basic lessons since most of them were hearing the truth for the first time: “God Created All Things,” “The Purpose of Our Lives,” and “The Gospel Makes Us Right with God.”  Fred and Julius planned to do follow up work among them.

Wednesday I flew from Cebu City to Manila, where I took an all-night flight to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. After arriving there Thursday morning, I flew on to Brisbane, Queensland State, where I took another plane on to Gladstone.  From there I traveled by car to Rockhampton where there is an established church of about 30 souls.  We conducted a gospel meeting on the theme of “The Authority of Christ” reviewing the history of the church from its establishment to modern times.  The brethren worked hard and several visitors came for the whole series.  Colin West, Daryl Johnson, and his brother Neville have worked hard through the years to keep this church in the strait and narrow way of truth.

While in Rockhampton I received an email message from Jojo Tacbad in the Philippines saying that his brother Emmanuel was working in Gladstone and looking for the church.  I spent March 4-6 in Gladstone, located Emmanuel and his family (four souls), and held a study with them in the home of Jamie and Deborah Williams.  The Tacbad family makes a wonderful addition to the little Gladstone church.  On my last day I conducted a home study with a lady Deborah befriended and was well received.

By God’s grace I arrived home safely on March 9 to be with Donna and all the saints at the Hebron Lane church.  My heart overflows with thanksgiving for the sacrifices and encouragement of so many saints who make these trips possible.  “To God be the glory, great things He has done!”

Steve Willis In Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada

March 12, 2013th Year of Our Lord

Dear brethren,

Steve Willis has labored for many years in a difficult outpost:  Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.  The Carry Drive church of Christ is small and can provide only partial support.  Steve and his wife has suffered medical problems during the past year but both are making a good comeback and recovery.

Every month Steve sends a report on his work including the up’s and down’s.  I have just returned from preaching in the Philippines and Australia and read his Feb. 12 report.   In the long struggle to maintain sufficient support, he has suffered setbacks as the result of the U.S. recession and churches declining in membership.  In recent years his support has gradually declined but not his expenses.

If you have or know of available resources, please keep Steve in mind.  He can be contacted at 2Swillis@gmail.com via email and he will be glad to answer any questions or provide any information.

If some individual would like to help Steve on a regular basis or send one-time help, and if a tax deduction would help, you may make out the check to HELP A NEIGHBOR, INC. and send it to me at 3505 Horse Run Ct., Shepherdsville, KY 40165-6954 (include a note stating your desire to help Steve).  Otherwise, you can send help to Steve Willis at his home address: 18 Rossmere Court SE, Medicine Hat, AB, Canada T1B 2M3.

Let us remember brethren like Steve who have sacrificed to stay at their stations of duty under difficult circumstances in order to proclaim the gospel to all the world.  They need our prayers and encouragement!

In Christian love,

Ron Halbrook

Halbrook Philippine Report Feb 26-Mar 9, 2013

Friday, March 8, 2013th Year of Our Lord

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

Greetings to everyone! Though I cannot see you with my eyes, you all are in my heart and prayers.

After finishing the work planned in Cebu City on February 25th, the following day (Tuesday) was left open before I started the long journey to Australia. It is good we did not schedule any activities today because I was absolutely exhausted. I rested, took some exercise, and studied as possible.

The Church of Christ in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia

The next two days became one long extended day of travel. Wednesday I flew from Cebu City to Manila, where I took an all-night flight to Sydney, Queensland, Australia. After arriving there Thursday morning, I flew on to Brisbane, where I took another plane on to Gladstone. Jay Stevenson met me at the airport and drove me the remaining 70 miles to Rockhampton. The State of Queensland is huge and all of these places are in this State.

Daryl Johnson gave me a quick tour of Rockhampton. It was established in 1868 and currently has about 70,000 population. He took me to supper and left me at the hotel to rest-which I was very much ready to do by that time!

On Friday I studied and rested trying to adjust to the change of time zones between the Philippines and Australia. The Rockhampton church of Christ came out from the church of Christ here which became a part of the Associated Churches of Christ or “The Churches of Christ in Australia.” Many years ago they formed state conferences, which in turn are associated on the national level. Through these associational organizations the churches support missionary boards, a college, and various ecumenical endeavors. They also use instrumental music and other denominational practices like the Christian Churches in the U.S. The Rockhampton church broke away from this apostasy in 1957.

The church has a commodious building and has flourished at times, but in recent years has lost several members who fell into denominationalism or various forms of liberalism. Their normal attendance is 25-30. Three of the older men are trustees of the property and have worked very hard to keep the church on the strait and narrow path, and to keep brethren on the same page in making decisions about the work. They are Colin West, Daryl Johnson, and his brother Neville. This church has existed through most of its life without the help of a full-time evangelist, so the men have shared teaching duties.

It has been a very long time since they have had a gospel meeting and they have certainly gone to work on this one. They passed out 800 invitations in several neighborhoods, put two banners in front of the church building, personally invited various contacts, and put ads in the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday newspapers listing the topics.

The theme for this week was “The Authority of Christ” with six lessons starting in the first century and tracing the great apostasy which resulted in Roman Catholicism, followed by the rise of denominationalism, the restoration plea, and the need to avoid apostasy today. The brethren’s hard work paid off the very first night. Friday evening’s attendance was about 30 including five visitors. One of them told me he lives nearby and saw the banners, then read the newspaper ad. Another visitor is from the associated church here in town. Both of these men were very attentive. The neighbor took notes, selected several tracts, and promised to return.

The first two lessons presented tonight covered the authority of Christ expressed in Scripture, his authority exercised for our salvation, and his authority in the local church. The brethren decided to begin each service with the beautiful song “The Church’s One Foundation.” One of the members who is married to a non-Christian stayed for a long time afterward asking questions about how to convert her mate. I gave her as much encouragement as possible, then prayed with her that she might be strong and faithful to the end and also teach her children to obey the gospel regardless of what her husband does. We hope he will submit to Christ.

Weather patterns in this area include cycles of dry spells and rainy spells. In recent months they are having much rain with flooding. The heat and humidity caused me to sweat so much my clothes were wet when the lessons were finished, and I went back to my room exhausted. Air conditioning is not widely used and the church building has only small ceiling fans. Fortunately, the hotel room is air conditioned.

I studied Saturday morning until shortly before noon when Jamie, Deborah, Timothy, and Seth Williams arrived from Gladstone. We went out for lunch, spent a couple of hours together, then rested and got ready for the 6:30 PM service. Our service was blessed again by the presence of five visitors. The man from the associated or instrumental church returned and brought his 30 year old son to hear the lessons. The neighbor who came last night returned, paid close attention again, took careful notes, gathered more tracts, and seemed very happy to be there.

The lessons discussed the historical development of the Roman Catholic Church, followed by the development of denominationalism. During the Q & A period, the man from the associated church asked questions reflecting his agreement with some things covered in the two lessons. He is concerned about the liberal trends all across the religious landscape.

It was hot and humid again tonight-my shirt was wet again when I finished preaching.

The rain continued off and on Sunday morning, March 2, as I studied. When there was a pause, I took a break for a walk, but before I got back a heavy shower soaked me.

At 3:00 PM Daryl Johnson came to pick me up. The two services began at 4:00 and dismissed about 6:30, with the Lord’s Supper observed at the beginning of the second service. The custom here is for everyone who wants to partake to gather in a large circle at the communion table for Scripture reading and prayer, and then the communion is served.

There were 40-45 in attendance including our visitors again. The visitor from the neighborhood was present and promised to return, so we hope follow-up studies will be possible with him. The man from the instrumental church of Christ who brought his son to hear the lessons is a pillar in that group but was present again with his son for both lessons covering the restoration plea and the danger of apostasy today . I made it very clear that organizations centralizing the work of churches and instrumental music in worship are major apostasies which afflict God’s people. Again, he was very complimentary of the lessons, so I offered to teach the same series where he worships-we will see if anything materializes.

After services we gathered at the home of Troy Polzin for supper and to discuss the meeting. The brethren were elated that their efforts had opened doors for visitors to be present at every service. We hope fruit will be borne. I learned the recent rains caused so much flooding that one of the families lost several cattle to drowning and fought off 60 snakes fleeing the water.

Gladstone, Queensland, Australia with the Williams Family

Jamie and Deborah were present for these last services and drove me safely to their home in Gladstone after the supper gathering.

No studies were planned for Monday, March 4 , but the time was used to accomplish some needed work. First, I completed and sent a message to knowledgeable Filipinos cautioning them about Randy Hilburn from Bakersfield, CA. Though that church is not institutional, he has been preaching in the Philippines in recent years in the company of institutional liberals and also Jim Puterbaugh (who teaches God has one eternal moral covenant allowing all divorced people to marry new mates). Randy practices unity-in-doctrinal diversity by working in fellowship with such false brethren.

Then I phoned and encouraged a Filipino brother who had worshiped with his family at his house while working on a dairy farm in New Zealand, and who is now worshiping the same way on a chicken farm in Australia six hours from the nearest known church.

In addition, I contacted a Filipino family of four who have been meeting in their home here in Gladstone because they did not know there is a church here. The man’s brother sent me a message from the Philippines asking me to contact the man-providentially at the very time I was over here! We arranged for him to bring his family for supper at the home of Jamie and Deborah so they can get acquainted. This new family can be a great asset to the little church here!

The last thing I worked on late into the night was gathering material to email to a preacher on Mindanao who is preparing for a debate on the “one container” issue. During the day I did manage to squeeze in time to read Bible stories to the grandchildren, Timothy and Seth. This was a very full day and I was more than happy to finally find the bed!

I studied Tuesday, tried to catch up on some email, read Bible stories for an hour to the grandchildren, and then we had the new Filipino family over for supper and a study. Emmanuel, Ann, Ezekiel (age 12) and Sam (age 5) Tacbad arrived about 6:00 PM and stayed until almost 9:30. I have known many of Emmanuel’s family in the Philippines for years including his brother, a faithful preacher in the Pampanga Province, who asked me to help find a place for him to worship. He is a mechanical engineer and has worked in five countries including now Australia. He expects to be here for several years.

Though he has worshiped with his family, this is the first time outside the Philippines Emmanuel has worked where there is a true church, and he let us know he is thankful and excited about it. I presented the lesson on “The Glory of God,” Psalm 19 verse by verse, which he and his family thoroughly enjoyed. Though I leave tomorrow, we invited them to return here tomorrow night for the mid-week Bible study, which he immediately agreed to do.

The meeting in Rockhampton made my time in Australia worthwhile but so did this unexpected chain of events leading us to locate another family to be active in the Gladstone church!

Even Wednesday , the last day to teach in Australia, turned out to be a bonanza. Deborah has befriended an Aussie whose children enjoy playing with her children, and the two of them have engaged in Bible studies and discussions. Deborah invited her to come to the house this morning so that we could study, and she did. Kirsty Itallie is a dedicated member of her denomination, has done charity work in Africa, and is a diligent Bible student.

After sketching a basic time frame for Bible history, showing that the Great Commission was given after Jesus died and arose, I guided us through a verse by verse study of Mark 16 . When I focused on the plan of salvation in verse 16, she admitted that Deborah’s previous efforts had really set her to thinking about this. When I showed her that Catholicism changes the order by putting baptism first, she saw the point immediately.

When I showed her that denominationalism’s doctrine of salvation by faith only, followed by baptism, also changes the order given by Christ, she admitted she could see that, but added in all honesty, “When you have spent 30 years in another understanding of salvation, this is not easy to accept.” She granted salvation by faith must mean obedient faith, and when we applied this principle to Mark 16:16, again she did not hesitate to admit she saw the point, and she even brought up James 2 herself!

When she brought up the principle of salvation by grace through faith in Ephesians 2, I again pointed out that she had already granted it must be obedient faith and Acts 19:5 shows that the Ephesians who were saved by grace were baptized consistently with Mark 16:16.

At the end she asked if I thought she was saved or lost, adding, “Not that I think a man’s opinion is final, but I am interested in your thoughts on it.” I told her to answer her own question by reading the passage again. She was not offended and clearly saw the point! I then asked if it might be possible to feel saved but to be lost in terms of what the Bible reveals, and she immediately answered the Bible is the final authority on all such matters.

I gave her the notes we had sketched during our study and she promised to continue studying. No one can predict what she might finally do, but her openness and honesty really showed through. Deborah and I both noticed Kirsty beginning to tear up as she recognized the truth and its application to her soul. Let us pray she will fully submit to Christ, which again will open more doors for the little church in Gladstone!

Just before we left the house, Timothy spilled his orange juice from Dan to Beersheba, dousing my trousers. There was no time to change, so I wiped it off as best I could and let it dry on the way to the airport. Grandchildren have a way of filling our lives with new adventures-that was my first time to wear orange juice on an airplane. I kissed them all goodbye and boarded a flight to Brisbane. What a wonderful day it has been!

Headed to Home, Sweet Home!

A connecting flight took me to Sydney to spend the night and prepare for the eight-hour flight on Thursday to Manila. I spent Friday recovering, studying, and preparing for the 24-hour trip home on Saturday, March 9. I will be in the air and on the way by the time many of you see this last report.

My heart is filled with joy and gratitude to God and to all the saints who make these trips possible. May God give the increase and be glorified in all that we do together serving Him. As the song beautifully proclaims, “To God be the glory, great things He has done!”
In Christian love, Ron Halbrook

Halbrook Philippine Report Feb 18-25, 2013

Monday, February 25, 2013th Year of Our Lord

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

The week-long series of classes on the home and family began after lunch on Monday, February 18, hosted by Jonathan Carino. The classes meet in the large room which the Cebu City church of Christ rents in an old hotel in the downtown. Jack Jaco (from Victorias City, Negros Occidental) and I covered the first four lessons in L.A. Stauffer’s excellent workbook on Family Life: A Biblical Perspective. My lessons dealt with the necessity of the biblical perspective and God’s design for marriage while Jack covered the atmosphere and necessity of love in the home.

On Monday 39 people participated in our studies. Several people have come from the nearby Visayan Islands and even as far as Mindanao. Brother Ramon Carino came from Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur Province, Mindanao. Though in his late 80’s he is still alert, active, and a joy and an inspiration to be around. The young Baptist preacher who is a friend of Fred Ogario and who attended Saturday at the place of Roy Matta is sitting at the front row taking in every lesson. We are off to a good start and look forward to the week.

Our Tuesday classes started at 8:00 AM and continued until 6:30 PM with lessons by Jack Jaco, Lordy Salunga (from Tarlac City, Tarlac on Luzon) and myself on basic duties of home life. I taught on man’s duty to lead in love, the woman as man’s companion and helper, and two lessons emphasizing the permanent nature of the marriage covenant. Jack taught on the woman’s role of subjection and on the children’s duty to honor their parents. Lordy covered parental duty to train children, the father’s role in providing for the needs of the family, and the importance of Bible guidelines in choosing a mate. The men and women who gathered to hear these nine lessons listened intently and participated well.

On Wednesday, February 21 , our focus shifted to the material in Mike Willis’ workbook on Harmony in the Home. It presents principles resulting in peaceful, stable, and harmonious family relationships. All three teachers presented lessons on putting off the old man and putting on the new man in Christ, and showing how this moral change has an uplifting impact on family life. The last studies of the day introduced principles found in the Sermon on the Mount which promote harmony in the home. Our audience is attentive and appreciative.

My first lesson Thursday completed applications to home life from the Sermon on the Mount. Jack dealt with the importance of family members showing respect to each other and being unselfish, while Lordy dealt with problem solving and accepting responsibility in family life. The whole afternoon was devoted to four lessons on “Man’s Leadership in the Home.” At the day’s end I conducted an open forum. There was a good mix of questions including how to administer proper discipline to children, and which of the four wives of a polygamist is his real wife under God’s law-an issue they confront in real life, not mere theory.

The Friday morning classes consisted of four lessons which I presented covering The Song of Solomon verse by verse. It is celebration of passionate love in marriage, but many in the audience had never studied this book and they seemed to greatly enjoy it. I emphasized applications we should learn and make in our homes such as the importance of husbands and wives complimenting each other.

Benjie “Julius” Labura, a Baptist preacher, and his wife have been attending the classes as guests of Fred Ogario. Early Friday morning before our studies began, they were both baptized into Christ. He will gather his Baptist members and friends for us to teach them on Monday.

Having completed the series on the home, Saturday, February 23, we drove 50 miles to Bogo City at the far northern part of Cebu Island, a trip of two-and-a-half hours. Gil Suico preaches in this area and has been teaching Bible classes in a nearby village where most people are Roman Catholic and have never studied the Bible, which is typical. He invited them to join our studies today. About 50 people gathered in a function room at a hotel in a central location in the city where I preached on “God Created All Things” and “The Purpose of Our Lives.”

Fred Ogario and Pablo Espinosa went with us and their talents were helpful. They shared in reading each passage in their dialect and Fred summarized the lessons. This is not always necessary, but we often ask the audience their preference. It can take twice as long to read a passage in the Cebueno dialect as it takes in English. Including the Scripture readings and summaries in Cebueno today, it took the same amount of time to present these two lessons as it would take to present four lessons simply using English, but it was important that the audience clearly understand what was being taught. These efforts were rewarded when we sung an invitation song and two ladies came forward to obey the gospel of Christ.

Gil Suico again gathered the people from the village where he has been teaching for our Sunday worship in Bogo City. After our two-and-a-half hour drive, the first lesson was “The Gospel Makes Us Right with God (Rom. 1:16-17).” This study briefly shows the difference between the true and the false as we seek the right God, the right Savior, the right gospel, the right baptism, the right church, and the right life.

Since most of them were Roman Catholic, I pointed out some ways the Catholic Church has changed the gospel and the New Testament pattern of worship. After having Fred read them Matthew 26:26-28 in Cebuano, I pointed out Jesus taught that “all” disciples were to eat the bread and drink the cup, and then I asked them when the Mass is observed in the Catholic Church, who drinks the cup? They answered, “Only the priest.” Their faces showed they were amazed to learn that Jesus said all disciples will drink the cup!

With Fred reading the passages in Cebuano, the lessons moved along a little slowly, but maybe that gave it more time to sink in. In the afternoon, Gil asked me to teach a subject he heard me present a long time ago: “Attitudes Essential in God’s Kingdom”-a verse by verse examination of Matthew 5. I pointed out that in verse 19 Jesus exposed the religious leaders for teaching the people how to break God’s law under the pretense of obeying Him. Jesus taught in Matthew 23:8-10 that God alone is our spiritual Father and that no man should be given that title, but the Catholic hierarchy teaches people to call the priests “Father,” and Pope means “Father.”

Most of the lesson dealt with the applications Jesus made in reference to anger, sexual temptations, divorce, oaths, retaliation, and love of enemies.

Another study was planned, but after this study Gil admonished the people for about ten minutes that they should obey what they were learning. Lo, and behold, before we could proceed, many proceeded to stand and to indicate they wanted to obey the gospel–they started coming from their seats to the front–26 of them in all! They had not planned to do this and brought no clothes to change into after baptism, so we quickly arranged to buy some cheap clothes for this purpose. After each one confessed Christ, they loaded onto about half a dozen tricycles (small motorcycles with side carts used as taxis) and traveled some distance to reach the water for baptism.

A new congregation will begin meeting in their village, and there is already talk of putting up a simple meeting house. These people surprised themselves-and us as well! O, happy day!!!

Also today Felix Cantulan was with us. He is a very competent man converted about a year ago by Juanito Balbin in Davao City on Mindanao. Felix told me his interest in the true gospel grew when he began reading Truth Magazine in 2010, which played an important role in his conversion. He was formerly a preacher with the “Local Church” movement started by a Chinese man named Watchman Nee (1903-72), and it was brought to the Philippines and the U.S. in the 1950’s by Witness Lee (1905-97). Nee claimed to be guided mystically by the Holy Spirit and taught some bizarre concepts on the nature of God and the nature of man. His organization holds tight control over their ministers and members though they claim to practice congregational autonomy.

Felix has been teaching the truth he learned to his contacts in the Nee movement. Not only was his support from them terminated, but also he was recently offered reward money if would just stop teaching his contacts among them! He refused although he badly needs income-in fact his wife is in the hospital. He wants us to come back as soon as possible in order for him to gather a large number of his contacts interested in learning more about the truth.

Truly, the harvest is plenteous but the laborers are few!

The newly converted Baptist preacher, Julius Labura, and Fred Ogario gathered 127 souls on Monday at Talisay in a function room at a Jolibee (Filipino version of McDonald’s). I taught three very basic lessons since most of this audience was hearing the truth for the first time: “God Created All Things,” “The Purpose of Our Lives,” and “The Gospel Makes Us Right with God.” Fred read my passages in Cebuano and Roy Matta gave short summaries of the lessons in the dialect. During the invitation it was evident that some were very near to obeying the gospel, but we did not pressure them. Fred and Julius are already planning to do follow up work among them.

This completes the work scheduled in the Philippines. Tomorrow I will study, rest, and prepare to travel to Manila on Wednesday to make a connection to catch an all-night flight to Australia for the work planned there.

Clouds and rain have obscured the moon, but I will check again tonight-you might be watching it too!

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and help. Truly, we are laborers together with God and He gives the increase according to His will and purpose.

In Christian love, Ron

b. Man wear skirt of Scottish culture vs. ordinary woman’s skirt-cross dress, transgender dress, confuse sexual identity

c. Symbol of rebellion, associated with drug culture, immorality

d. Skin head for men & women-associated with hate groups

B. Harmful Body Appearance

1. Some articles & markings have difference meanings at different times & places:

a. Gen. 24:22, 30, 47 Abraham’s servant gave earring (nose-ring) to daughter of Bethuel as gift

b. Gen. 35:4 Idolatry associated with earrings (charm, amulet)

c. Ex. 32:2 Aaron asks men & woman for earrings to make golden calf

d. Lev. 19:1-2, 26-28 Idolatry associated with hair style, cutting & marking the body

e. Deut. 14:1-2 Idolatry associated with hair style

f. Deut. 22:11 No garments of mixed materials-God’s people distinguished from others

g. Judg. 8:24-27 Gideon used men’s earrings (nose-rings) to make ephod

h. Isa. 3:21 Prosperous women wore nose-rings

i. Ezek 16:12 God dressed (blessed) Jerusalem-this nose-ring hung from head, no piercing

2. Homosexuals used earring as badge of identity in U.S.
1980’s-other men saw message of rebellion against morality & adopted it as badge of rebellion

a. If interview all males who wear earrings, much larger percentage homos & rebels than general population-the association continues

3. Tatoos & body Piercing often send message of rebellion & moral confusion

a. Study conducted Adolescent Medicine Division, Dept. of Pediatrics, Naval Medical Center San Diego, San Diego, CA, published in Pediatrics, June 2002, pp. 1021-27: “The results show that the presence of tattoos and body piercings in adolescents is associated with greater risk-taking behaviors of those adolescents in the areas of gateway drug use, hard drug use, sexual activity, suicide, and disordered eating behaviors.
In particular, young adolescents with tattoos and body piercings are at greater risk for suicide and cigarette, alcohol, and marijuana use.
Violence is found to a greater degree in males with tattoos and females with body piercings.  Finally, abuse of hard drugs such as cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and Ecstasy increases as the number of body piercings increases.  The presence of tattoos and body piercings in adolescents does not necessarily indicate risk-taking behavior in particular individuals, however, the presence of such should alert parents, teachers, and health care providers of the possibility of greater health risk in adolescents with tattoos and/or body piercings, and appropriate care should be implemented.”

b. Such associations mar the holiness of Christians!

III. Respect the Body, Do Not Mutilate It

A. Body Piercing Goes Beyond Cosmetics to Mutilation of Body

1. Body created by God as instrument of service to Him (Gen.
1:26-28; 2:7; Eccl. 12:13-14)

2. In both ancient and modern times, heathen peoples have cut, gashed, carved, pierced, mangled, castrated, tattooed, branded, and mutilated the body in various ways in order to show extreme grief for the dead, to appease the gods, to provide marks identifying themselves as belonging to a god, or to decorate the body by distorting its natural design.  Doctors will tell you there are several health risks involved in body piercing, as with any similar mutilation practice.  God forbad His people to engage in such practices which identified them with idolatry and impurity, not to mention the pain and risk of disease involved.

3. Our bodies devoted to serve & glorify God (Rom. 12:1; Tit.
2:11-14)

4. Though body piercing is not specifically mentioned in the New Testament, we need to ask whether it is consistent with the principle of respect for the body as an instrument of service to God, a principle taught throughout the Bible.  When the body is used for self-indulgence and carnality, man descends into the darkness of emptiness of soul, depression, and self-destruction.  Western culture is gradually descending and degenerating into a culture of death by rejecting God and the spiritual values of the Bible and by embracing abortion on demand, euthanasia, infanticide, assisted suicide, and entertainment glorifying violence.  This mentality is gradually producing a generation fascinated with pain, the sensation of inflicting pain on others, and the desire to experience self-inflicted pain.  Mutilating the body is just one sign of this downward cultural spiral.  This culture of death is undermining our respect for the body as an instrument of service to God, just as ancient idolatry did.

IV. Questions Help Assess Harmless & Harmful Fads

A. Will this practice increase and enhance our influence for Christ in the world and in the church, or will it hurt and weaken our influence for Christ?  Matt. 5:13-16.

B. People younger than ourselves who look up to us will be influenced.
Do we want to recommend to them that this is a wholesome and helpful
practice?   1 Tim. 4:12.

C.  If we saw the strongest Christian we know with his tongue, eyelids, navel, or knuckles pierced, would our respect for him grow or be diminished?
In other words, would we think he was glorifying God or worshiping the
world?   1 Cor. 6:20.

D. From what we know about the teaching, life, and example of Christ,
would he do this and encourage his disciples to do it?   1 Pet. 2:21.

E. Where did we get the idea of doing this:  from worldly people or from
the most godly people we know?   Rom. 12:1-2; 2 Pet. 3:18.

F. If we do this, will it make us feel closer to and more comfortable
with people in the world or people in the church?   Ps. 1; Ps. 119:63; Prov.
13:20; 1 Cor. 15:33.

Godliness or Worldliness: Clothing

GODLINESS OR WORLDLINESS:

Which Does Our Clothing Show?

Introduction:

There is a clear need for the study of this subject. This is not a sermon which would be accepted by most in the religious world. In fact, this lesson would not be accepted among many brethren. There is no doubt that some in this audience do not agree with some of the principles to be set forth in this sermon. In the past, I also rejected some of the principles I will preach today, but I became convinced that they are according to truth and made the necessary changes in my life and teaching. My hope and prayer is that this sermon will begin a discussion about this issue which will culminate in a unity of teaching and practice based upon principles of truth. As with any other Bible subject, if I am in error, you would be my friend by pointing out that error. I only ask that you give this sermon a fair and open hearing, then base your faith and practice upon the principles of truth. May God bless us all in our study to that end.

Some would suggest that the subject of how much of the body must be covered by our clothing is ultimately settled in the mind of each individual because God has given no absolute truth regarding such in His word. Others, of whom I am one, would suggest that God has given clear standards for that which proper clothing is to cover. It cannot be both ways, for these views are mutually exclusive. If proper clothing is ultimately a matter of opinion, then no one has the right to bind any absolute standard on another. Each must be permitted to be “fully assured in his own mind” without interference from others (see Romans 14). If it is a matter of opinion, we must cease any disputation about the subject regardless of the clothing or lack of clothing under consideration. If proper clothing is ultimately a matter of revealed truth, then the one who rejects that standard is guilty of sin and must repent of such to be in fellowship with God and faithful brethren (2 John 9-11). Serious consequences exist for teaching and practice which stray from God’s will in either case.

I. Principles And Attitudes Fundamental To This Study

A. 1 Timothy 2:9-10

1. Modest–“orderly, well-arranged, decent” (Vine, III:79).

(a) “The well ordering is not of dress and demeanor only, but of the inner life; uttering indeed and expressing itself in the outward conversation” (Trench, Synonyms of the New Testament, 323).

(b) “It describes one who disciplines himself and who may thus be regarded as genuinely moral and respectable…. ‘self-controlled,’ ‘disciplined,’ ‘well-mannered,’ ‘honorable'” (Kittel, III:895-96).

2. Shamefacedness–“a sense of shame, modesty, is used regarding the demeanor of women in the church, 1 Tim. 2:9…. ‘Shamefastness is that modesty which is “fast” or rooted in the character'” (Vine, IV:17).

(a) “The shame , or sense of honor, which hinders one from doing an unworthy act….in it is involved an innate moral repugnance to the doing of the dishonorable act….implies reverence for the good as good [and not fear for reputation alone]….that ‘shamefastness’…which shrinks from overpassing the limits of womanly reserve and modesty, as well as from the dishonor which would justly attach thereto” (Trench, 63-68).

(b) Thayer comments on this word by saying it “precedes and prevents the shameful act” and that it “would always restrain a good man from an unworthy act” (Thayer, 14).

3. Sobriety–“soundness of mind…. ‘sound judgment’ practically expresses the meaning” (Vine, IV:44); “self-control” (Thayer, 613).

(a) “An entire command over the passions and desires, so that they receive no further allowance than that which the law and right reason admit and approve….This condition of self-command is taken up and transformed into a condition yet higher still, in which a man does not order and command himself…but…is ordered and commanded by God….that habitual inner self-government, with its constant rein on all the passions and desires, which would hinder the temptation” to overstep “the limits of womanly reserve and modesty” (Trench, 66-68).

(b) W.E. Vine makes these comments (Expository Dict. of N.T. Words, vol. 4, p. 44-45): “It is that habitual inner self-government, with its constant rein on all the passions and desires, which would hinder the temptation to these from arising, or at all events from arising in such strength as would overbear the checks and barriers which `shamefastness’ opposed to it.” “Sobriety” would keep one from wearing that which is designed to be the “sexy,” “revealing,” “eye-catching,” “hot,” and “provocative” styles currently in fashion. It would see such as the “attire of a harlot” (Proverbs 7:10). It is a needed characteristic today!

4. Godliness–“the fear or reverence of God” (Vine, II:162).

5. Dress reflects godly spirit, no carnal display of flesh by overdressing or underdressing.

B. 1 Peter 3:1-6

1. Chaste–“pure from every fault,….pure from carnality, modest” (Vine, Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, I:183; see also Thayer, 8).

(a) Bauer comments as follows: “pure, holy… originally an attribute of the divinity and everything belonging to it… then transferred to moral sense” (Bauer, A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, trans. by Arndt & Gingrich, 11).

(b) Note use with respect to people (2 Cor. 7:11; 11:2) and things (Phil. 4:8).

2. Fear–respect God’s authority in all things, thus respect husband.

3. Meek–gentle spirit accepting God’s will without resentment or dispute, thus able to endure insult and injury by others; moral strength under control.

4. Quiet–inner peace with God, thus causing no danger or disturbance for others; not forward or bold.

5. Holy–separated from sin, consecrated to God.

6. “Not afraid” to do what is right at all costs.

7. Appeal is made here for Christian women to look at faithful women’s example of old: “For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves….”

(a) Not a reference to Mosaic law, but Sarah even preceded that law.

(b) When these women of old had the proper attitudes, the proper “behavior” went with such – including their behavior in dress. That is the point emphasized in the context.

(c) “The rule for the holy women of the New Testament time extending down to our day is not different from what was the rule for the holy women of the Old Testament time, resting as it does on a Divine appointment in the earthly constitution” (Pulpit Commentary: 1 Peter, 163).

C. Testimony From Contemporary History To Help Understand Contexts

1. The following is an extended quote from Robert Collen’s book, East to Cathay: The Silk Road (pages 44-46), dealing with the introduction of silk clothing into the first century Roman kingdom: “Silk in its natural state clung to the female form in a way that was infinitely more pleasing to the eye than Parthian banners. But Roman ladies did not stop at that. For one thing, there was not enough pure silk to go around at first. And, anyway, it was not sexy enough for those freewheeling days. So, they unraveled the close-woven Chinese fabric and rewove it into a flimsy gauze which left little to the imagination. So unlike Chinese silk was this Roman adaptation that the Chinese, when they eventually saw it, named it `ling,’ assuming that Rome was growing a special product of its own. For the average Roman girl-watcher those were golden years, but the moralists raised a fearful outcry. `I see clothes of silk, if clothes they can be called,’ wrote the philosopher Seneca (4 B.C. – A.D. 64), `affording protection neither to the body nor to the modesty of the wearer, and which are purchased for enormous sums, from unknown people.’ Pliny told of garments that `render women naked.’ Other writers waggishly referred to clothes `made of glass.'” Thus, the expensive clothes of New Testament times were the revealing clothes that lacked modesty. It was not a prejudice against wealthy people and the luxuries they could afford which caused the Bible writers to condemn “costly raiment.” The indecency as well as the extravagence associated with such clothing caused it to be condemned.

2. Late in the first century, Clement of Alexandria spoke of the same silk fashions as “fabrics foolishly thin, and of curious texture in weaving.” He went on to speak of such as follows (The Instructor, II, xi): “For these superfluous and diaphanous [transparent – HRO] materials are proof of a weak mind, covering as they do the shame of the body with a slender veil. For luxurious clothing, which cannot conceal the shape of the body, is no more a covering. For such clothing, falling close to the body, takes its form more easily, and adhering as it were to the flesh, receives its shape, and marks out the woman’s figure, so that the whole body is visible…” Clement goes on to say that such clothing was associated with “vice” and not with “modesty.”

3. The second century Tertullian described such as “garments which, light and thin, were to be heavy in price alone.” He referred to them as “prostitutionary garbs” appealing to “the provocative charms of apparel.” Tertullian also noted that such clothing was the polar opposite of “modesty” (On The Apparel Of Women, II, ix and x).

(a) Tertullian says much the same throughout books one and two on this subject.

(b) See Prov. 7:10 where the wise writer speaks of the “attire of a harlot.”

4. Thus, we can understand why the apostles opposed clothing which was the “costly raiment” or “fine apparel” of the New Testament time. A great number of historical sources clearly and unanimously tell us about the fashions of the day.

D. Principles Regarding Christian’s Influence Through Actions

1. 1 Thess. 5:21-22“prove all things”

2. Col. 3:17“do all in the name [by authority] of the Lord”

3. 1 Cor. 10:31“do all to the glory of God”

4. 1 Pet. 2:11-15 work to glorify God

5. Lk. 17:1-2not to be a stumblingblock

6. 1 Cor. 10:32no offense, but profit

7. 1 Pet. 3:15flive beyond reproach

8. Matt. 5:13-16“let your light so shine that men may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven”

9. Eph. 5:11“have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them”

II. Bible Teaching Which Specifies Truths Regarding Proper Dress

A. The First Clothing: Man VS God

1. When sin came, nakedness passed from state of innocence to one of shame and danger (Gen. 2:25; 3:7, 10-11).

2. Fig leaves used to make APRONS (3:7).

(a) Hebrew: HAGORA-“girdle, belt,…loinclothes,…aprons” (Harris, Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament, 1:263; cf. Gesenius, Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon, 260; Brown, Driver, Briggs, Hebrew and English Lexicon, 292).

(b) Greek (LXX): PERIDZOMA is compound of “around” plus “life” (euphemism for the area whence comes life). Use of the word in Jer. 13:1-4 makes clear what it covered.

(c) Garment covering loins; from abdomen down, pubic region and hips; anything from midriff or waist and often covering hips (like a woman’s girdle, traditional athletic shorts, a miniskirt, etc.).

(d) Completely “naked” or nude before apron (v. 7), relatively “naked” with apron (v. 10).

3. Animal skin used to make adequate clothing or COATS (3:21).

(a) Hebrew: KUTTONET–“a tunic…; generally with sleeves, coming down to the knees, rarely to the ankles” (Gesenius, 420; cf. Harris, 1:459; Brown, Driver, Briggs, 509).

(b) Greek (LXX): CHITON is the corresponding word which refers to the same garment.

(c) Garment covering from shoulders at least to knees, sometimes longer. This word used in Gen. 37:3 regarding Joseph’s coat of many colors with this note in the margin of the ASV: “a long garment with sleeves.” Also may have a “collar” (Job 30:18).

(1) Josephus says the high priest’s chiton was a “tunic descending to the ankles, enveloping the body and with long sleeves…” (Antiquities, III, vii, 2).

(2) Original I.S.B.E. article on “Dress” says chiton “resembled the Roman tunic, corresponding most nearly to our long shirt, reaching below the knee always, and, in case it was designed for dress occasions, reaching almost to the ground” (I.S.B.E., II:877). Later in the article, it is noted that the chiton of the peasantry was shorter like modern kamis of Syrian fellah which is to the knee.

(3) Wright says, “The tunic (inappropriately translated ‘coat’) was a shirt which was worn next to the skin. It was made of leather, hair-cloth, wool, linen, or in modern times, usually of cotton. The simplest form of it was without sleeves and reached to the knees or sometimes to the ankles. The well-to-do wore it with sleeves and extending to the ankles. Women as well as men wore it [see Cant. 5:3, A.R.V.], although there was no doubt a difference in style and pattern in what was worn by the two” (Fred H. Wight, Manners and Customs of Bible Lands, 91).

(d) Adam went from strictly naked, to partially naked, to properly clothed with the tunic.

4. First clothing from man inadequate because not fully cover nakedness (3:10) ; first clothing from God adequate (longer lasting material secondary–God not make aprons of skins).

5. Remember: Principles of godly demeanor and dress same from then till now (1 Pet. 3:5).

(a) “For after this manner”–New Testament on demeanor and dress.

(b) “…in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands”–Old Testament on demeanor and dress, beginning in Genesis.

6. Shorts and other articles of dress exposing the thighs to the opposite sex:

(a) Like aprons God exchanged for proper clothing.

(b) Fall short of the principles of demeanor and dress recognized by holy women in all ages.

B. Two Kinds of Nakedness: Complete and Partial

1. Naked in strict sense (nude), or partial nakedness (not adequately or fully clothed), as determined by context.

(a) Hebrew: ERYA–“nakedness” (Harris, 1:695).

(b) Greek: GUMNOS

(1) “Unclad, without clothing” (Thayer, Greek-English Lexicon, 122); “unclothed” (Kittel, Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, 1:773); “naked” (Liddell and Scott, Greek-English Lexicon, 170).

(2) “Ill-clad” or “clad in the undergarment only” (Thayer, 122); “badly clothed” or “not fully clothed” (Kittel, 1:773-74); “in common language…lightly clad” (Liddell and Scott, 170).

2. Strict sense:

(a) Gen. 2:25 “They were both naked, the man and his wife.”

(b) Gen. 3:7 “They knew that they were naked.”

(c) Gen. 9:21-23 Noah “was uncovered” and Ham “saw the nakedness of his father.”

(d) Job. 1:21 “Naked came I out of my mother’s womb.”

(e) Mk. 14:51-52 “Having a linen cloth cast about his naked body” (night clothes).

(f) Lk. 8:27, 35 “A certain man…wore no clothes;” “clothed, and in his right mind.”

3. Not adequately or fully clothed:

(a) As a laborer, poor man, victim of crime, etc. (no moral shame):

(1) 2 Sam. 6:14, 20 David laid aside royal robes and danced before the Lord in “a linen ephod” (attire of humble Levite), thus “uncovered” as a man of no honor.

(2) Isa. 20:2-3 Isaiah was to lay aside his “sackcloth” garment and prophesy “naked.” “A person was looked upon as stripped and naked if he had only taken off his upper [outer] garment” (Keil and Delitzsch, Isaiah, 372). The poor laborer worked in such attire (Ex. 22:26-27).

(3) Matt. 25:36 “I was…naked, and ye clothed me.”

(4) Jn. 21:7 Peter worked “naked,” without his “coat” or outer garment.

(5) Acts 19:16 “They fled out of that house naked.”

(6) Acts 22:23 “They cried out, and cast off their clothes.”

(7) Jas. 2:15 “If a brother or sister be naked….”

(b) Exposing oneself to moral shame:

(1) Gen. 3:10 Adam hid from God “because I was naked” (wore apron).

(2) Ex. 20:26 No steps could be used on altars built to God, “that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon” (i.e., thighs; see 28:42).

(3) Ex. 28:42 Priests wore “linen breeches to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach” (waist to knees).

(4) Isa. 47:2-3 “Make bare the leg, uncover the thigh….Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen.”

4. Nakedness as a moral shame found from Genesis (3:7) through Revelation (3:17; 16:15; 17:16). Must be covered:

(a) Not cultural or custom, but ordained by God from the beginning (Gen. 3:10-11, 21).

(b) Standard recognized by holy women in all ages (1 Pet. 3:5).

C. Why Most Passages On Dress Directed To Women?

1. However, Adam recognized his nakedness was shameful despite partial clothing (Gen. 3:10). Hence, absolute standard would apply to both equally.

2. Added problem found in fact that woman’s dress greater danger to man than vice versa.

(a) Survey on why men and women go to beach: 69% men to see women in swim suits, 7% women to see men (“Beach Motives,” Psychology Today, Dec. 1982, p. 10).

(b) “Should a business or professional woman ever wear a skirt above her knees to the office? The biggest mistake women make is that they believe they see the world the way men do–but they see the world differently. We did a study with women wearing conservative suits with skirts above the knees. Women would comment that the women were attractive and could be very capable, very talented. Men, on the other hand, said they saw legs,” which was “sexy” (John Mollory, author of books and column on dress, “Issues and Answers,” Houston [TX] Chronicle, 19 Aug. 1993, p. 4F).

2. Must apply Bible principles on dress to men too.

(a) Adam: nude, partially clothed, properly clothed.

(b) Danger of temptation for some women.

(c) Danger with spread of homosexuality.

(d) If not apply, wrong example for women, double standard. “Why are women’s bared breasts ‘obscene’?…Why do men have the freedom of undress when it is hot, when women don’t?” (Pamphlet protests Brattleboro, VT obscenity law, “National and World News,” The Commercial Appeal [Memphis, TN], 30 July 1991). A New York state Court of Appeals ruled in 1992 “that women should have the right, like men, to bare their breasts in public” (“Women don’t have to wear tops to ride subway,” Houston [TX] Chronicle, 1 Sept. 1994, p. 13A).

III. Efforts To Make Issue Just Matter Of Opinion Or Unknowable Area

A. Consider Culture and Custom

1. Nakedness covered by God, principle not subject to change (Gen. 3:7, 10-11, 21; 1 Pet. 3:5).

2. 1 Cor. 9:19-22 Adjust to styles and fashions, but not beyond the limit of God’s Word.

3. Woman’s head veiled in Corinth, but not in Asia Minor (1 Cor. 11:2-16; head uncovered, hair visible in 1 Tim. 1:3; 2:9 and 1 Pet. 1:1; 3:3). Nakedness of Gen. 3:7, 10 tolerated nowhere (cf. Rev. 16:15).

B. How Short Is Too Short?

1. How long or short for hair? Styles change but closer to line of male-female distinction, closer to sin (1 Cor. 11:14-15). Leave no doubt!

2. Keep clear distinction between garments made by man and God: apron, girdle, loin-covering VS cover from shoulders at least to knees.

3. “How short can I go?” Dangerous game.

(a) How short down from shoulder, up from knees, or both?

(b) How far short of nudity–how decide?

(c) Why stop short of nudity if no absolute standard, but just opinion? May we join nudist colony? Bride wore only a veil, groom only a bow tie, and minister only glasses for wedding at Natural Horizons, Inc. near Boling, TX (“Browsing on the Brazos,” Brazoria County [TX] News, 23 Sept. 1993, pp. 1, 18). Why not? How would you oppose such?

C. Popularity Ex. 23:2; Josh. 24:15; Matt. 7:13-14

D. Comfort, Convenience Lk. 9:23

1. At risk of compromising God’s Word?

2. At risk of losing your soul?

3. At risk of misleading others?

F. “I Don’t Care What Anyone Says, I Like My Shorts Even if They Expose My Thighs.” Jn. 12:48; Matt. 26:39

G. Compromise for Sports

1. Compromise forbidden. Isa. 52:11

2. Modesty compromised by some Jews in intertestamental times:

(a) Some said, “Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us: for since we departed from them we have had much sorrow….They built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen” in 175 B.C. (1 Maccabees 1:11,14).

(b) Greek: GUMNASION (from gumnos, naked) “the public place where athletic exercises were practised, the gymnastic school” (Liddell and Scott, 170). Greek athletes exercised and performed nude.

(c) While many orthodox Jews shunned the gym and its nudity, other youths joined in with a loincloth and some stripped naked (I.S.B.E., IV:2112 and Moore, Judaism, I:49). Some “made themselves uncircumcised” to please the Gentiles, and some priests neglected the altar and “hastened to…the place of exercise” (1 Macc. 1:15; 2 Macc. 4:14).

3. Meet challenge with courage and conviction, insist on proper clothes, not surrender by compromise. Rev. 18:4

H. Seek Safest Course, Set Best Example

1. Sober mind of modest dress for all Christians, and must teach children (1 Tim. 2:9, 15; Tit. 2:2-7, 12). Requires highest standards of sound judgment, self-control, habitual inner self-government in dress.

2. Must be clearly modest at all times standing or sitting.

3. Bad signs: conscience troubled, tug at garment, use something extra to cover legs when sit (newspaper, magazine, coat, cushion, etc.).

IV. Where Does It All Lead?

A. Shorter and Shorter Shorts, Skirts & Tops (1 Tim. 4:2)

1. Conscience seared and hardened, expose more and more nakedness.

B. More Tolerant of Other Forms of Worldliness (2 Tim. 3:13)

1. Mixed swimming accepted.

2. Approve abbreviated attire of majorette, cheerleader, drill team, etc.

3. Examples of how one compromise leads to another:

(a) To oppose shorts, dancing, mixed swimming, and social drinking is “trivial,” “legalism,” and “petty” (liberal Rubel Shelly, “Why Were They Ever `Issues’?” Love Lines [publ. by Woodmont Hills Church of Christ, Nashville, TN], 18 Sept. 1991).

(b) Liberal church commends teenager for being “a cheerleader,….on the gymnastics team,….on the track team” (“Shelli Honored…,” The Family of God [publ. by Garnett Church of Christ, Tulsa, OK], 28 Oct. 1981).

(c) Preacher going into apostasy said no sin in shorts, mixed swimming, dancing, drinking, and gambling (Dusty Owens, “Answering the Mail,” The Examiner [Charles Holt, ed.], Sept. 1987, p. 12).

(d) Where these views are accepted, shorts are being worn into the worship assembly. Such has even taken place where this preacher has held meetings in the West.

C. Create Sexual Temptations (Rom. 13:13; 1 Pet. 4:1-4; Gal. 5:19)

1. Nakedness associated with sexual impulses and desires–so much so, to “see” or “uncover” nakedness is euphemism for sexual intercourse (Lev. 20:17).

2. Immodest dress lascivious–“absence of restraint, indecency….shameless conduct” (Vine, II:310)–associated with sexual immorality (Gal. 5:19; Rom. 13:13; 1 Pet. 4:1-6).

3. David tempted when “saw a woman washing herself” (2 Sam. 11:2). Note: Bathsheba was at home, but visible. She bears part of blame for carelessly exposing herself and accepting the king’s offer (ie. she was flattered by such, rather than shamed and repulsed).

4. Remember the survey on “Why People Go To The Beach,” survey from Psychology Today, Dec. 82, p. 10. They asked people, “What is your primary reason for going to the beach?”

(a) Of the men, 69% said “to watch the opposite sex.” Of the women, 7% answered same.

(b) Of the women, 40% said it was “to be seen.” Of the men, 10% answered the same.

(c) Of the women, 43% said it was “to sun” and 7% of men answered the same.

(d) That which was being shown, watched, and sunned is very obvious given the attire typical of the beach.

(e) The world is honest when they are asked about such desires because they have nothing to hide. Why do brothers and sisters in Christ try to whitewash their desires? They do not fool the world! Even if their motives were pure, they must see that they are aiding others in sin and ruining their influence for good.

5. On magazine covers and television shows about the latest fashions in swim wear, the leads are all similar. They speak of “sexy,” “revealing,” “eye-catching,” “hot,” and “provocative” styles. A recent survey showed that the average span of fabric between the armhole and leg hole on a one-piece bathing suit is between four and six inches. It is clear they were not designed for conforming to biblical standards for proper clothing. Can anyone honestly call such “modest” by Bible standards?

6. In some cases, the world’s standards even define “proper clothing” in a way more in keeping with Bible principles than do some Christians. The following is from a flyer entitled “Dress Standards For Visitors” which is distributed to the visitors for the Twin Rivers Correctional Center, a prison in Monroe, Washington:

CLOTHING NOT ALLOWED:

☞ Low-cut (exposing undergarments, cleavage, back)

☞ Sheer, transparent or mesh fabrics (other than hosiery)

☞ Tight fitting clothing (spandex, lycra or other rubberized or elasticized)

☞ Clothing that refers to obscenity, alcohol, drugs or sex in any form

☞ Shorts, cut-offs, halter tops, sleeveless blouses or shirts

E. Resist and Resent Plain Bible Preaching (2 Tim. 4:3-4)

1. Claim, “We cannot really know what modesty is–gray area.”

2. Proclaim, “No one’s business how I dress.”

3. Complain to others (too strict, traditional, bind opinions, out of touch with young, etc.).

4. Campaign to “change preachers if he doesn’t hush about it.” I even had a list of forbidden subjects at previous congregation – and “Modesty” was one of the subjects listed.

5. Decide to “worship elsewhere where we can be more needed and appreciated.”

F. Soften Hearts for Next Apostasy (2 Tim. 4:3-4)

1. “Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative” in pulpit (move subject of modesty to classroom, where it will be called “gray area”).

2. “Should not offend anyone.”

3. “Just preach love and issues go away.”

4. “Preach Christ not baptism, one true church, obedience, Bible pattern, modesty, etc.”

Conclusion:

1. If a Christian, resolve to reflect godliness not worldliness in dress (Matt. 5:16)

2. If stumble and err, confess to God and correct sin (1 Jn. 1:9)

3. If not a Christian, obey gospel without delay and grow in Christ (Acts 22:16)

Halbrook Philippine Report Feb. 12-17, 2013

SUNDAY, Feb. 17, 2013th Year of Our Lord

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

Greetings to all in the name of Christ our Lord. Fortunately, Monday before leaving for the Philippines on Tuesday I walked and jogged for an hour. This gave me stamina for the all-night duty of finishing final preparations and for the 28 hours of travel. By God’s grace the flights were safe from Louisville to Atlanta to Tokyo and on to Manila. The doctor who did the surgery on my left ear for hearing problems did an examination a few days before I left, and he was pleased with the healing process and released me to go. My ear caused me no pain on the flights. I got to bed about 1:30 AM Thursday in the hotel in Manila and slept well.

ThursdayI met Elias Cruz and Teresa Toreja to give them three large boxes of materials to be used in teaching the class next week on the family. They shipped them as air cargo to Cebu City so that I did not have to check them as part of my baggage and pay exorbitant fees. Then I went on to the airport and flew to Cebu City where I met Jonathan Carino at 3:30 PM. It was good to be reunited with this good brother who is so much help to the cause of Christ.Friday, the 15th, we went to the church building at Sitio Marupa, Subabasbas, Lapu-lapu City in the Metro Cebu City area. The area has a population of over two and a half million and Lapu-lapu City has over 350,000. Pablo Espinosa has preached here for many years with good results. Fifty attended today including a large number of Roman Catholics he has been teaching. The lessons presented were basic including “God Created All Things,” “The Purpose of Our Lives,” and “The Gospel Makes Us Right with God.” Jonathan Carino and Fred Ogario helped by summarizing each lesson in the local dialect. The audience was very attentive all day.

Pablo lives are among the poorest people in Cebu City. In fact, they live on government land and the church building is located on government land. The civic leaders are very happy to have Pablo there because of his good influence, his wisdom in resolving disputes, and his ability to help solve crimes. He is often asked to lead prayers at public functions and even to address the people about God’s will.

Here we are in the dead of winter and the high was in the 80’s today. My clothes got wet from sweating, but an extended afternoon shower cooled the atmosphere and made it more bearable. Thank God for all gifts large and small!

Fred Ogario, a former Baptist preacher, helped convert another Baptist preacher named Roy Matta several years ago. Roy has been working diligently after converting many of his former Baptist members. The Labogon church of Christ is located in Mandaue City which is part of Metro Cebu. We spent Saturday preaching there with Roy. The small building was filled nearly to the point of overflowing with about 50 in attendance.

Fred Ogario brought a young Baptist preacher and his family he has been teaching. After the lessons on “Jesus Came to Seek & Save the Lost,” “New Beginnings in Christ,” and “The Resurrection of Christ,” one lady came forward to be baptized. While conversing with the young preacher after the dismissal, I learned he is convinced we are preaching the truth but feels the need to learn a little more. When I preach at Fred’s place on the 25th, this man plans to bring his whole congregation to hear the lessons. Can you imagine that happening there in the U.S.? Actually, such events happened many times during the 1800’s and early 1900’s, but that great harvest season gradually died down. The same thing will happen some day in the Philippines and we must work while it is day!

Today, Sunday, the 17th, was a long hard day. In order to visit the saints in the Ormoc City area on the island of Leyte , it was necessary to leave the hotel just after 4:00 AM to catch the fast craft at 5:30. The first hour of the two-and-a-half-hour trip on this ferry was a wild ride on some of the roughest waves I have ever experienced. The staff sounded a warning several times and told the passengers to take safety precautions-they never told us how-as the vessel bounced, twisted, popped, and creaked. I began to wonder if I was going to have to swim again, not a river this time, but the Visayan Sea! Finally, the waters calmed and we slept the rest of the way.

Willie Pelino has faithfully labored in the Ormoc City area for many years. He lost his support a couple of years ago but continued farming to support himself and then took a teaching job at a new high school. We visited two of the three congregations he serves. At the Linao church of Christ in Ormoc City 25-30 attended in a home where we were packed in like sardines as I taught on “The Resurrection of Christ” (verse by verse study of Mark 16). Jonathan Carino then summarized the lesson in their dialect, and preached a separate lesson on Peter’s denial of Jesus.

Willie then took us to his house out in the country on a tricycle (small motorcycle attached to a carriage with seats at the side and in the back). After his wife served a delicious meal of rice, fish, pork, fresh pineapple, and bananas, 20-25 saints of the San Vicente church of Christ met at 2:00 PM in his home. Jonathan spoke on the rich man and Lazarus, followed by my lesson on “The Resurrection of Christ.” By the time Willie got us to the wharf, we had about an hour’s wait for the 7:15 PM trip back to Cebu City. He proceed to the third congregation which is made up of five high school students he has converted-and some of the parents are visiting with interest.

I got back to the hotel at 10:00 PM, more than ready to sleep but also anxious for the classes on the home to start tomorrow. What a great privilege to work with these diligent Filipino saints of God! Thank you, brethren, for making this work possible by the grace of God!

Did you see the half moon? Remember, I relay my love and greetings via the moon. 🙂

Now, my body demands sleep, and I yield.

In Christian love, Ron

The Edsa-Pasay Church of Christ has Begun in Manila

For a number of years brother and sister Rody Gumpad have discussed the need to establish a congregation in the Greater Manila area at a strategic location easy to reach. Metro Manila is populated by 12 million people while Greater Manila is almost 25 million strong, and both are constantly growing. This includes a great multitude of Christians from the provinces looking for work who are scattered all over the region. It is hard for many of them to find and reach the congregations scattered in the Greater Manila area. Rody has no desire to compete with any established faithful church but only to gather precious brethren who can hardly reach those congregations as a nucleus for a new work. In fact, he is already working in cooperation with brethren who live and preach in the Greater Manila area.

After studying the Greater Manila area and considering available transportation routes, Rody rented a function room in a place which is very accessible in Metro Manila. Here are the first announcement and reports:

RODY’S JAN. 13, 2013 REPORT:

Tessie and I are very happy to inform you that Our first worship service this morning here at Edsa-Pasay Church is very successful! We first expected only about 8 to 10 that will come but we have 22 attendance including a baby! Five of them are not Christians and we are so happy to see their spiritual interest! they promised to come back again on Sunday and hope we can baptize some of them! We also have a collection amounting P2,690.00! The brethren were so edified with my lesson in our Bible Study (The Old Testament) and my sermon (The New Testament). Some of them even shade of tears at the end of the Sermon because we realized how important to serve God who first loved us and will take us home in heaven someday! So, we could say that it is a very good start, very hard but challenging and we trust God that He will continue to help us look for His people in this Lost mega city!

RODY’S JAN. 20, 2013 REPORT:

Brethren, we are so very happy to inform about the new work we are starting here in Edsa-Pasay, Manila! Yesterday (January 20) was our second Sunday-worship and we thank God because we have a total 0f 37 attendance (5 of them are babies)! We also have a total collection amounting P2,922.00! Last Sunday attendance was 22 and Collection was P2,690.00. In our Bible study and in my Preaching I discussed about Matt. 7:21-23; “Why Many will not be saved?”. We have several non Christian visitors. During the Bible study, serious questions were raised and it is always good to answer those who are honestly seeking the Truth! As a result, while singing the invitation song, two of the young ladies came forward and confessed their faith in Christ! We are very happy because of their obedience but then we do not know where to baptize them? However, one of the members told us about a condominium swimming pool near to where they live! So, transaction/communication started and after confirmed we went and baptized them into Christ. Both of them (Princess and Jessica) were so very happy that they are now Christians! Both of them are in College and kindly include them in your prayers so that they will become strong Christians and good example also to others, please! Brethren, kindly continue also to include us and the work we are doing here in your prayers, please! Thank you very much!

RODY’S FEB. 7, 2013 REPORT:

Regarding the Manila work, Tessie and I were inspired and challenged to come start one at this strategic area because of the necessity! Since the work started here in the Philippines, there was no faithful Congregation that was existed in this area except one at Menlo Street in Pasay but known as Pro-Divorce, Pro-eating of Blood, and other “Pros” or unsound practices (where Jim Puterbaugh is worshiping)! To make the story short, we know that it is hard especially financially but because we are praying for a faithful congregation to be started in this area so that also those Christians from Provinces may have a place to worship, so, we came and started last month-January 13th. So far, the effort is doing well! Hope our number will continue to grow until the Congregation can afford to pay our rental each month! At present, we are lacking of $300 to $400 each month because I did not expect that the Church that supporting my radio before reduced my support from them of $200.00 because their number continue to decline and they are not getting anymore good size of their contribution they wanted! I mean we are okay of our rental until the month of May or June because I already requested my supports and used or funded the checks I issued for this purpose!

This new church is identified as the Edsa-Pasay Church of Christ. Not only is the location accessible to many Philippine brethren but also it is easily accessible to Americans visiting Manila. As his reports show, the work is off to much better start than Rody and Tessie had imagined. Visitors already are coming and are showing an interest in the gospel.

In order to visit this new congregation, or to help them in some way as they are getting started, contact Rody via email at

rodygumpad2002@yahoo.com or via cell phone 0916-468-3589 (from the U.S. dial 011-63-916-468-3589).

American preachers who have already visited and preached at the new work during February include Harry Osborne from Oklahoma City, OK and Andy Alexander from Bowling Green, KY. God willing, I will speak there ASAP.

Let us pray for this new work in a very strategic location in a nation which is experiencing a great harvest season as the gospel of Christ is proclaimed to lost souls.

In Christian love,

Ron Halbrook

48th PHILIPPINE TRIP NOV. 27-DEC. 20, 2012

January 26, 2013th Year of Our Lord

HALBROOK REPORT:

48th PHILIPPINE TRIP NOV. 27-DEC. 20, 2012

 Dear brethren,

This 48th Philippine preaching trip since Jim McDonald took me in 1995 was unique: Jim Barnett (Artesia NM) and Steven Saunders (Clarence, MO) taught singing classes! Also, several Pentecostal preachers obeyed the gospel! Satan takes souls “captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ” (Col. 2:8 NIV). Souls freed from bondage to sin and error sing their Savior’s praises (Col. 3:16). Preaching and singing truly are allies in serving God and defeating Satan. The singing classes were a great blessing and boon to Filipino saints. It was my privilege to teach 48 times and to see 23 souls step forward to submit to Christ in baptism.

Jim, Steven, and I reached Manila late November 28 and began immediately the next day at the Kapitbahayan church of Christ, Navotas, Metro Manila. Jerry Toreja and Wilfredo Gonzales are elders, and Elias Cruz an evangelist there. Jim and Steven provided material on singing and gave pitch pipes to song leaders. Selecting lessons to augment singing classes, I spoke on “The Purpose of Our Lives,” “Before Abraham Was, I Am,” “Reverence in Worship,” “Holy in Worship & in Life,” “I Will Sing Unto the Lord,” and “Instrumental Music in Worship.” Eight men traveled a great distance from Palawan Island to participate.

Sunday Jim and Steven preached at Kapitbahayan and I preached in Muntinlupa City at the Bilibid Prison with Willie Pastor. We continue praying for his release, but by God’s providence he keeps preaching the gospel to the inmates. About 35 attended our worship and five asked to be baptized. Willie’s brother, Kenneth, is an approved religious worker in the prison and helps the growing work. Over 200 have been converted during Willie’s confinement for almost three years.

Sunday evening we flew to Cebu City for singing classes December 3-5 at the Cebu City church of Christ on Cebu Island where Jonathan Carino preaches. Men came from the Visayan Islands and northern and southern Mindanao to this central location. The training included Bible studies along with musical notes, rhythm, sight reading, and song leading. Ramon Carino was the oldest student at 88, and he took his turn in the practice session. The strongest typhoon on record to hit Mindanao barely missed us during the week. Some of you prayed for us at that time. Since getting home I’ve worked to get relief to many suffering saints.

Next, we flew to Manila and on to Tuguegarao, Cagayan Province in northern Luzon for classes December 6-9. Rody Gumpad registered 30 men to receive the handbook and other materials, but many more attended. Tessie and her assistants prepared good food for the attendees. Voice trouble knocked me out of two days work, but I was able to preach to 100 souls at Tabuk, Kalinga Province with Ben Vistro Saturday. Sunday after worship at the Metro church, we scattered to visit area congregations at Alibagu, Maddarulog, Maguirig, Lingu, and Minagbag. Steven managed to finish the day in spite of fighting a sinus infection and weakened voice.

Our Monday flight to Manila could not land because of the clouds (the airport has no radar), so Rody loaded us into two vehicles for a long and arduous journey to Manila. We arrived on the 11th just in time for Jim and Steven to catch their early morning flight back to the U.S. Thank God, they reached home safely.

I flew to General Santos City in southern Mindanao to work with Rudy Tampon, Jolly Julom, and other saints. Denominational preachers joined us December 12-15 for 13 lessons on How to Study the Bible, my six-lesson series on “The Authority of Christ,” and other topics by Jonathan Carino, Jack Jaco, Juanito & C.B. Balbin, Cyrus Gesulga, and Jolly Julom. Fifteen people obeyed the gospel. Sunday we worshiped with Aguilardo Untal, a recently converted denominational preacher, where their new sign says Church of Christ. Area “pastors” are accusing this man and other converts of joining a cult.

During the last year the Balite church in General Santos City lost their elders and preacher to death, but C.B. Balbin has been coming from Davao City to help them. Tuesday 38 souls gathered for a gospel meeting. Jack Jaco and I preached and C.B. led the singing. The brethren were greatly encouraged.

My 24-hour flight home turned into 40 hours because of mechanical problems with the plane in Manila and weather problems in Detroit. I was diverted to Chicago and Memphis but arrived safely home filled with joy and thanksgiving for the united work of U.S. and Filipino saints by God’s grace.
