Halbrook Philippine Trip December 13-17, 2018

Dear family, brethren, and friends around the world,

Thursday marked the beginning of two days of studies on the theme “The Bible Is the Word of God” with the same audience here in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.  To start the series Jim surveyed the Bible to show its fundamental message is the coming of Jesus Christ to be the Savior of the world.  After this introduction, I guided our audience in a verse by verse examination of Psalm 19, showing that the creation and Scripture proclaim “The Glory of God.”  I called on our audience to help in reading the passages we discussed.  Everyone listened intently and participated well.  One brother’s eyesight is so poor that he walked up the to the white screen which projected the passage in large letters in order to read it.

After a lunch break, Steven resumed our studies by giving an overview of the three Bible dispensations, emphasizing God’s will that men obey Him by faith.  My next lesson explained “The Inspiration and Authority of Scripture (2 Tim. 3:14-17),” showing that God miraculously guided and guarded the giving of every verse in the Bible.  Thus, the Bible expresses God’s authoritative Word for our salvation.  We must humbly and strictly submit to His instructions in order to receive the forgiveness of our sins, to live in a right relationship with Him, and to spend eternity in heaven with Him.

Halbrook Philippine Trip December 10-12, 2018

Dear family, brethren, and friends around the world.

Jack met us at the hotel in Bacolod City Monday morning to take us to the rented venue in Victorias City, about 45 minutes travel.  As is typical in the Philippines, the attendees arrived little by little until there were 62 of us gathered.  The first day Steven and Jim start with basics of music and song leading, and begin to get an idea about the needs of the audience.

“I Will Sing unto the Lord” based on Exodus 15:1 was my morning sermon – God is worthy of our adoration and praise for many reasons.  After lunch it was not long until Jim and Steven had the men beating time.  My first afternoon lesson was entitled “Holy in Life, Holy in Worship (1 Tim. 2:8),” showing that God commands us to live holy lives every day as well as keeping His commandments in the worship service.

Halbrook Philippine Trip December 6-9, 2018

Dear family, brethren, and friends around the world.

The final two days in Puerto Princesa City on Palawan were devoted to the theme “The Bible Is the Word of God.”  Jim began the series on Thursday with an overview of the Bible message which is focused on Jesus Christ.  My first presentation was a verse by verse examination of Psalm 19 entitled “The Glory of God.”  Both the creation and Scripture proclaim God’s great glory!  When we extended the Lord’s invitation, two young ladies came to be baptized as a result of the work of Jonathan and Emmanuel Sapitula.  They were baptized into Christ without delay!

After lunch Steven discussed the three periods of Bible history: the patriarchal age, the Mosaic age, and the gospel age or Christian age.  He emphasized that God has always expected man to obey Him.  I then directed our attention to “The Inspiration and Authority of Scripture” followed by “The Writing and Canon of Scripture.”  These lessons show the Scriptures were given by the miraculous inspiration of God, resulting in 66 books which He has protected and preserved to our time without the loss or addition of even one book.

Halbrook Philippine Trip December 3-5, 2018

Dear family, brethren, and friends around the world,

Monday morning we flew from Manila to Puerto Princesa City on the island of Palawan.  Dario Belviz and a large delegation of saints met us at the airport and brought us to the hotel where we will stay and conduct this week’s classes.  Many have come from great distances at their own expense, even from other islands, to attend.  I have been doing this type work long enough to learn to pity the host because a heavy load falls on him in making all the arrangements for an adequate place to conduct such studies and also to accommodate the brethren who gather.  Dario is faithfully fulfilling these duties with the help of several brethren without complain.

Normally, Steven and Jim prefer to have three full days for the singing classes, but today we started at 1:30 P.M. after traveling from Manila.  This first day I did not preach in order to let them maximize their time and relieve some of the pressure of losing half a day.  Actually, this was a blessing for me because the time spent in my room studying and resting allowed me to apply medication to my toes and to stay off my feet.  Perhaps the infection has slowed the healing process, but the wounds are closing up little by little (thank you for your prayers!).

Halbrook Philippine Trip November 27-December 2, 2018

Dear family, brethren, and friends around the world,

By the grace of God, the time for my 72nd preaching trip to the Philippines arrived on Tuesday.  After completing all the details necessary for the trip, I was blessed to have almost two hours to sleep.  The lights from Louisville to Detroit to Tokyo, Japan to Manila all went well.  At Detroit Jm Barnett (evangelist from Hope, N.M.) and Steven Saunders (evangelist from Macon, MO) joined me for their third Philippine trip.  They are talented song leaders and bring valuable talents for teaching song leaders.  We checked into our hotel about 10:30 P.M. Wednesday, thankful for God’s providence in giving us safe travel.  I went immediately to the exercise room for a 45 minute workout, which helps me recover from the 27 hour trip.

Thursday morning several Filipino brethren met us at the hotel to re-pack six boxes loaded with materials for singing classes and assorted Bible study materials.  All these materials are relayed ahead to our destinations and are distributed at the various venues during our visits.  The rest of the day was present with miscellaneous duties such as visiting the money changer, and then reviewing lessons for the next day of teaching.

Help A Neighbor Annual Report (November 1, 2017-November 1, 2018)

November 24, 2018th Year of Our Lord

Dear brethren and friends,

Help A Neighbor began in July of 2007 to provide for others what they cannot provide for themselves in the spirit of Matthew 22:39: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”  Help A Neighbor (H.A.N.) exists for humanitarian and charitable purposes as defined by section 501 (C) 3 of the IRS Code.  All donations are legally tax deductible.  This is simply a legal means for individuals to extend aid to individuals.  No church donations are accepted – H.A.N. is not an ecclesiastical organization.

This annual report covering November 1, 2017-November 1, 2018 is made in the interest of integrity and transparency.  Our main focus is helping Christians in the Philippine Islands, but occasional help is extended to Christians in other parts of the world including the U.S.  Our aim is to help people who demonstrate their willingness to help themselves.  During this time period donations amounted to $339,939.00.  Most donations are modest amounts with occasional larger gifts.  Including funds from other accounts used for the Philippine work, a total of $373,300.00 passed through the H.A.N. account.

October 13 Update on Typhoon Relief

Dear brethren,

On September 28 I sent an update regarding the effects of Typhoon Mangkhut or “Ompong,” a category 5 storm which hit Luzon on September 15.  By God’s grace, no saints were seriously injured or killed, but crops and homes were destroyed on a massive scale.

At one point shortly after the disaster hit, Rody Gumpad compiled a list of 125 churches which were affected, at which time their emergency needs equaled over $90,000.00.  Those churches are located in northeastern Luzon in the Cagayan Province and some surrounding provinces, but this does not account for all of the needs in these areas – not to mention other provinces.

Halbrook, Saunders, Barnett: Philippine Preaching & Singing November 27-December 18

Dear brethren,

Below is some information about the next Philippine preaching trip planned for November 27-December 18.  Funds for this trip have been slow to come in, especially in view of our concentrated efforts to find financial help for Filipino victims of the super Typhoon Mangkhut (also called Ompong) which hit Luzon on September 15.  Thank you for the generous response to their emergency needs for food, medicines, and repair of their houses.

I must now begin to focus on the preaching trip coming up next month as outlined below.  Also please read the appeal from Steven Saunders below regarding his preparations for the trip.

Efforts to Relieve Suffering of Saints

Dear brethren,

On September 15 while the Carolinas here in the U.S. faced Hurricane Florence, Luzon in the Philippines was hit by Typhoon Mangkhut or “Ompong,” a category 5 storm (Florence hit as a category 1).  CNN reported, “Mangkhut was the strongest storm anywhere on the planet in 2018, carrying gusts of up to 325 kilometers per hour (200 mph) before it made landfall in Cagayan province, on the northern tip of Luzon, about 1:40 a.m. local time.”

Brother Rody Gumpad with the help of several brethren surveyed the vast damage in the Cagayan Province and nearby provinces (though not comprehensive of all the churches in all of these or other provinces).  He listed the name and location of the churches, the evangelist’s name at each place, the active members and attendance, the estimated amount needed in each place, and notations regarding churches that reported receiving some help (not meaning all the needs were met in those places).  The total of these reported needs is $91,400.00 U.S. dollars (almost 5 million pesos).  Including funds already relayed by myself and others, $15,900.00 can be distributed (which would average about $90 per congregation if divided in that manner), i.e., lacking $75,500.00 to actually meet the estimated needs among the brethren.  The most pressing needs are food and repairs to destroyed houses.  Rody’s breakdown of this information is dated September 26 and reproduced below.
