Philippine Preaching Trip August 2022
July 2, 2022nd Year of Our Lord
Dear brethren,
God’s good providence has opened the door for my 79th trip to the Philippines August 2-31. Jim McDonald first took me in 1995. Mark Mayberry, faithful evangelist for the Adoue Street Church of Christ in Alvin, TX, will be my co-laborer, arriving on the 10th. Trey Torno from College Station, TX will join us August 10-22 for the Mindanao trip. (Aug. 2-30 Keith Greer will work with Rody Gumpad on Luzon.)
A great harvest of souls brings growing pains, the need for edification, preparing preachers, and even new benevolence cases. When thousands were converted in Jerusalem, extraordinary sacrifices were made to meet benevolence needs: “And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need” (Acts 2:44-45). This was not socialism requiring people to divest themselves of all possessions but was sacrificial love and fellowship expressed to destitute saints through the church’s treasury.
We will visit churches to edify the saints and preach to the lost. Another important goal is to go to sites where hundreds of small houses have been and are being built for saints who suffered 16 earthquakes with 4,000 aftershocks in southern Mindanao October 2019-May 2020. Filipinos and U.S. saints have cooperated in this good work and we want to give firsthand reports on its progress. Many families have lived in tents for two years. Can we pause, reflect, and try to imagine such conditions for our own families?
On August 4 Elias Cruz and James Paet will meet us at the Manila hotel to ship boxes to the venues where we will distribute Bibles and teaching materials we plan to bring. The next day I will begin preaching in Metro Manila, working first with Elias Cruz at Kapitbahayan, Navotas and with Jerry Toreja at LapuLapu, Malabon. Saturday is scheduled for Meycauayan, Bulacan with Jaime Bobis. On the Lord’s Day I will preach with James Paet at the Edsa-Pasay church, then with Jaime Battung at Parañaque.
The 8th is scheduled for the saints at Phase 6 church in Calaocan City with Andrew Romero. Tuesday I will preach for the new church meeting with Simple Castro in Tondo.
On the 10th, Mark Mayberry & Trey Torno will arrive and we will fly to General Santos City on the island of Mindanao. All day preaching begins the next day at Kitakal, Malungon, Sarangani with Dondon Cadayona and many saints who will meet us. Next, we begin visiting sites where benevolence was sent to earthquake victims. I will spend Saturday & Sunday working with Nestor Francisco and Mark with Jolly Julom.
We will work with Salvador Parbo on the 15th & 16th and travel to Davao City. Mark and I will alternate working with Franklin Isla and Julie Notarte on the 17th-18th to visit as many sites of houses being built for earthquake victims as possible. Friday Connie Balbin works with us. Saturday is for rest and preparing for 3 busy days. Sunday I will preach at Bansalan, Davao del Sur with Frank Isla and Mark at Digos City, Davao del Sur with Julie Notarte, followed by three days of classes on Revelation at Bansalan.
On the 25th we fly to Manila and preach Saturday: Ron with Ciriaco Evangelista, Mark with Dominador Guevarra at Sta. Maria, Bulacan. The Lord’s Day will find me with Edwin de Pedro at Canlubang, & at Turbina, Calamba City, Laguna. Mark will join Junie Samontina at Trece Martirez & Carmona, Cavite. Monday is reserved to purchase Bibles in Filipino dialects to ship many places. We will stretch our budget for the Bibles as best we can, and fly home Tuesday, the 30th, arriving the next day.
