Philippine Preaching February 12-15, 2020

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

Many denominational preachers were invited to join us for three days of study at a hotel function room in Iloilo City beginning Wednesday.  Before the first morning ended, 76 of us were gathered to cover the workbook entitled How to Study the Bible, the same series presented in Victorias City on Negros.  By adding the additional day, I will be able to teach a series also on “The Authority of Christ” while the other speakers deal with various first principles of the gospel.

After each of my first two lessons today on how to study the Bible, I opened the floor for questions, but everyone agreed the teaching was clear, so there were none.  They are hearing new things and need time to digest what they are learning.  Kevin followed with “Reasons for Bible Study” before lunch.  There was a lunch break for an hour, and then Jonathan, Jack, and Kevin completed the next five chapters of the workbook.

Philippine Preaching February 9-11, 2020

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

On the Lord’s Day Jack Jaco took Kevin to preach at Victorias City in the morning and to Bago City in the afternoon where Shem Tapagan labors in the gospel (where two precious souls yielded to Christ in baptism).  Jonathan and I went to the Talisay City church where Bob Senining preaches and assembled with 45 people.  My first sermon was “God Created All Things,” emphasizing God’s sovereignty in the universe and in human life.

Effectively utilizing background information in the Passover Feast, Jonathan presented a thorough study of the Lord’s Supper at Talisay.  After lunch Jonathan taught on differences between the Law of Moses and the gospel of Christ, followed by my lesson on “The Purpose of Our Lives.”  We then conducted an hour-long open forum covering questions about the two covenants, giving into the church treasury and individual benevolence, God’s willingness to forgive all sins including adultery, the spiritual state of the Gentile world during the Mosaic Age, drinking intoxicants, divorce, and other interesting topics.

Philippine Preaching February 4-8, 2020

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

As typically happens in preparing for a Philippine trip, completing all the last minutes details requires working all night before going to the airport (you knew I was slooow, but you did not know how slooow).  Tuesday night I got 45 minutes sleep before leaving home at 4:00 A.M. Wednesday with Kevin Stilts, but, by God’s grace, our flights from Louisville to Atlanta to Tokyo to Manila were uneventful.  In addition to catching a few naps, I studied and prepared some charts while flying.  After about 30 hours travel, Kevin and I checked in at our hotel about 10:15 P.M. Wednesday (Philippine time is 13 hours ahead of U.S. daylight savings time).  I exercised 40 minutes, answered a few emails, and then slept 7 hours. Kevin likewise had no trouble sleeping.

Thursday morning a good crew of Filipino brethren including Elias Cruz, Andrew Romero, Ely Ebuenga, Jhun Gumpad, and James Paet joined us to repack 10 boxes of Bibles and study materials brought on the plane to be used in our work.  Actually, 5 boxes went to Tuguegarao, Cagayan in preparation for a preacher training class to be conducted April 20-May 15, God willing.

Preparing for February 4-25, 2020 Philippine Trip

(Brethren, This is not an alarm because I learned long ago to trust in God’s providence.  This is just a reminder for the sake of anyone who may have intended to help on the trip, but it fell off your radar.

I have been pressing hard to find as much help as possible for the earthquake victims in southern Mindanao, and some help for victims of flooding elsewhere.  It is typical that around the New Year some of you send donations, leaving the use to my discretion in view of the many needs in the Philippines.  Today I sent another $25,000 to be spread among earthquake victims, including donations many of you gave for that purpose and also discretionary funds.  (While such basics as food and medicine are still needed, small houses are now being built for brethren living in “tent cities” under deplorable conditions.)

Update on Benevolence Distribution to Earthquake Victims 1-22-2020

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

The devastation caused by the 5 earthquakes plus over 3,000 aftershocks in southern Mindanao since October is staggering, but God’s love and mercy is being poured out through the sacrifices of His saints in many places who are sending benevolence funds to relieve the suffering of the saints.  Two reports are reproduced below which you may have time to scan.  Faithful Filipino brethren are still relaying the benevolence to our brethren who are in need of help.

Meanwhile, Filipino evangelists also continue to utilize opportunities to preach the pure and simple gospel of Christ.  Poverty and suffering often humble people and cause them to seek God and salvation.  The result is that many have submitted to Christ in baptism for the remission of their sins through the blood of Christ.

Philippine Preaching February 4-25, 2020

PLEASE SHARE THIS LETTER ON GOSPEL PREACHING IN THE PHILIPPINES!
December 28, 2019th Year of Our Lord

Dear brethren,

The dates February 4-25, 2020 are scheduled for my 77th Philippine preaching trip since my first trip with Jim McDonald in 1995.  Kevin Stilts will join me for his first trip.  After serving as a deacon in the Hebron Lane church of Christ in Shepherdsville, KY, he moved to Elizabethtown, KY where he now serves as a deacon.  He is familiar with the Philippine work because he helps keep the financial records for this work.  Kevin is a competent Bible class teacher and has done some preaching.  We will visit several churches but will concentrate on teaching “How to Study the Bible” for preachers, including denominational pastors.

When the Jews of Thessalonica put Paul and the other saints in legal danger with the civil authorities, Paul fled to Berea where he immediately began teaching in the synagogue to convert the Jews to Christ.  “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).  Filipinos of noble character likewise are willing to search the Scriptures.

Preaching Report December 2-20, 2019

December 20, 2019th Year of Our Lord

HALBROOK REPORT: 76th PHILIPPINE TRIP DECEMBER 2-20, 2019

Dear brethren,

For the 76th time God has granted me the privilege to preach the gospel of Christ in the Philippines since He first sent me there with Jim McDonald in 1995.  Christians who came from a pagan background in Thessalonica soon rang out the message of salvation in Christ in every direction – “The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia – your faith in God has become known everywhere” (1 Thess. 1:8-10, niv).  Filipinos are abandoning their sins and false religions to sound out the true and original gospel of Christ throughout their nation and around the world.  On this trip I taught 35 lessons and 11 precious souls confessed Christ and were baptized to wash away their sins in his blood.

The flights December 2-3 from Louisville to Detroit to Tokyo, Japan and on to Manila were all safe, though we had a 4-5 hour delay in Tokyo waiting for Typhoon Tisoy to clear the Philippines.  Elias Cruz, James Paet, and Andrew Romero met me at the hotel Wednesday morning to re-pack 5 of the 6 boxes filled with Bibles and study materials to send ahead to places on the itinerary.  The other box made a side trip to Amsterdam and arrived a day late.

Incredible Tragedy: Another Strong Earthquake in Mindanao Dec. 15, 2019

Dear brethren,

Brethren and news agencies are reporting another severe earthquake hit the same area of Mindanao again Sunday.

“A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck parts of Mindanao at 2:11 p.m. Sunday, the strongest of the series of powerful quakes in the last two months.”

“It was the fifth quake above Magnitude 6 that jolted Mindanao between October 16 and December 15: Magnitude 6.3 on October 16; 6.6 and 6.1 on October 29; 6.5 on October 31 and 6.9 on December 15” (mindanews.com/top-stories/2019/12/6-9-quake-hits-mindanao-shoppers-employees-feared-trapped-as-shopping-center-in-padada-collapses/).

Home Again by God’s Good Grace

Dear family, brethren, and friends,

I am writing this quick note Friday at 9:30 PM now that I am home again by God’s good grace after having safe passage for the past 24 hours from Manila to Tokyo to Detroit to Louisville.

I thank God for granting me the privilege to labor again in the Philippines Dec. 2-20 with many dear Filipino saints.  They are always an inspiration to me, and I hope and pray that my efforts will always be edifying and encouraging to them.  Due to their labor in opening many doors, I presented 35 lessons and there were 11 precious souls baptized into Christ and his church.  God gives this increase through the power of His Holy Word (Rom. 1:16; 1 Cor. 3:6-8).  I am often reminded of David’s words in Psalm 107:8, “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!”
